Surviving a Tire Blowout

Tire blowouts can be a scary thing, especially if you're driving on the highway. But it doesn't have to be a catastrophe. There are simple things you can do to keep yourself and others safe while on the road. Here's what you should in the event of a tire blowout:

  • Remaining calm is the best way to stay safe. If you panic you may forget crucial steps that may put yourself in danger.
  • Get a firm grip on the steering wheel and steer straight. Trying to turn may cause your car to spin out.
  • You may need to gently step on the gas pedal in order to gain control of your car. The extra little push keeps the momentum going forward.
  • Don't slam on the brakes. Allow your car to gradually slow on it's own.
  • Once under 30 miles per hour, you should pull over onto the side of the road and wait for help.
